スカボロー・フェア（Scarborough Fair）は英国の伝統的バラードである。

この歌の舞台は中世末期まで遡り、その頃ヨークシャー地方（現 ノース・ヨークシャー州）の北海沿岸の行楽地スカボローは英国中の商人の重要な交易場だった。

そこには道化師や手品師が集い、8月15日には45日間の巨大な長期間の市が始まる。これがタイトルになっている Scarborough Fair （スカボローの市）である。市の期間中は、英国中や大陸からさえも人々がスカボローへ商売をしに集まった。

この歌は16～17世紀に、『エルフィンナイト』 (チャイルド・バラッド No. 2)という古いバラードを作り変えたものであると言われている。吟遊詩人が町から町へ歌を伝え歩く内にそれは変わっていき、何十もの詩が出来上がった、しかし典型的に歌われたものは少なかった。サイモン&ガーファンクルによって有名になった編曲は19世紀末に生まれたものである。

この歌は恋人に捨てられた若い男が、冗談げに彼女に縫い目なしで彼のシャツを縫ったり、それを乾いた井戸で洗うような一連の不可能な仕事を成し遂げれば、彼女を取り戻すだろうと聞き手に言う話をしている。しばしばデュエットで歌われ、男性が一旦歌い終わった後女性が恋人へ同様にできない仕事を成し遂げられれば縫い目の無いシャツを与えることを約束する。

"parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme"の繰り返し句は現代人にはよく理解できないが、象徴的意味に満ちている。

パセリは今日まで消化の助けになり、苦味を消すと言われており、そして中世の医者はこれを霊的な意味としても捉えた。

セージは何千年もの耐久力の象徴として知られている。

ローズマリーは貞節、愛、思い出を表し、現在でも英国や他のヨーロッパの国々では花嫁の髪にローズマリーの小枝を挿す慣習がある。

タイムは度胸の象徴であり、歌が書かれた時代、騎士達は戦いに赴く際に楯にタイムの像を付けた。

歌での話し手は、4種のハーブに言及することで、二人の間の苦味を取り除く温和さ、互いの隔たった時間を辛抱強く待つ強さ、孤独の間彼を待つ貞節、出来ない仕事を果たす矛盾した度胸を具えた真の恋人、そして彼女がそれらをできた時に彼の元に戻ってくることを望んでいる。

また、一説にはスカボローの市には処刑台があり、そこから魔除けの効果があるとされるこれらの香草が歌に織り込まれたともされる。

「不可能な仕事を成し遂げれば...」。。。これからの日本だと思う。
